Memorizing Scripture
I have fallen out of the habit of memorizing scripture lately. I found it to be an amazing practice but the first trimester of my pregnancy and all the morning sickness that came along with it threw me off on a few good habits I was aiming to cultivate.
Time to get back on it!
Here are some reasons I like to memorize scripture:
- I see scripture in new light and in new ways as I repeat a verses over and over.
- If I don't understand why things happen or happened they way they did in the scripture, I feel a lot more compelled to ask God about it and to confront these things in my mind as I repeat them over and over. There is no avoiding my confusion or skirting the issue.
- When scripture points out areas that I know I am falling short, I am less likely to avoid the issue and more likely to confess my shortcomings and humbly ask the Holy Spirit for help in that area.
- The word says of man "of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh." I am definitely one of those people that could use help with my mouth. I feel that filling my heart with scripture can only help me to speak better things.
- I like to pray for others and having the word memorized gives me words that are not my own to pray over others.
- Familiarizing myself with the word of God guards me from false teachings and lies from the devil.
- When I recite the word memorized in my heart out loud and with passion, I feel like God is speaking to me. It motivates me, challenges me, and sometimes gives me the chills.
- As I memorize scripture I fill my mind with the word instead of everything else the world wants me to fill my with. I like that as I fill my heart with God's words, other less worthy thoughts that lead to worries and vain thinking are replaced. I find this similar to my diet. I added in green smoothies and salads and there was less room for other unhealthy foods just because I can only eat so much in a day.
How about you? Do you like memorizing scripture? I would love to know what you have chosen to memorize and why you love it.
