Memorizing Scripture

I have fallen out of the habit of memorizing scripture lately. I found it to be an amazing practice but the first trimester of my pregnancy and all the morning sickness that came along with it threw me off on a few good habits I was aiming to cultivate.
Time to get back on it!
Here are some reasons I like to memorize scripture:
  1. I see scripture in new light and in new ways as I repeat a verses over and over.
  2. If I don't understand why things happen or happened they way they did in the scripture, I feel a lot more compelled to ask God about it and to confront these things in my mind as I repeat them over and over. There is no avoiding my confusion or skirting the issue.
  3. When scripture points out areas that I know I am falling short, I am less likely to avoid the issue and more likely to confess my shortcomings and humbly ask the Holy Spirit for help in that area.
  4. The word says of man "of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh." I am definitely one of those people that could use help with my mouth. I feel that filling my heart with scripture can only help me to speak better things.
  5. I like to pray for others and having the word memorized gives me words that are not my own to pray over others.
  6. Familiarizing myself with the word of God guards me from false teachings and lies from the devil.
  7. When I recite the word memorized in my heart out loud and with passion, I feel like God is speaking to me. It motivates me, challenges me, and sometimes gives me the chills.
  8. As I memorize scripture I fill my mind with the word instead of everything else the world wants me to fill my with. I like that as I fill my heart with God's words, other less worthy thoughts that lead to worries and vain thinking are replaced. I find this similar to my diet. I added in green smoothies and salads and there was less room for other unhealthy foods just because I can only eat so much in a day.
How about you? Do you like memorizing scripture? I would love to know what you have chosen to memorize and why you love it.
