Planning my day (part 2)

Previously, I mentioned how goals and to do lists can be helpful for our lives and I believe they are. But I think it is important that, no matter what we have planned that our priorities stay in tact. Simply stated, people matter.

Do you remember the good Samaritan in Luke chapter 10?
A man fell into the hands of some thieves and they robbed him and left him lying in the street. A priest comes and notices him but walks by on the other side. The same happens when the Levite comes. He just walks by on the other side.

Not the Samaritan. He notices him and helps him. He nurses his wounds. He pays for a place for him to stay. I wonder was this a part of the Samaritan's plan for the day? I doubt it but he recognized that this man was valuable. He looked at him through the eyes of the Lord.

I bet the priest and Levite had felt the same compassion for the man that the Samaritan did. I bet God urged them both in their hearts to go and help him and have mercy on him. But they suppressed their emotions and went on their way. And they missed it. They missed the heart of God. They missed their true purpose for the day.

I think of soldiers in the battlefield. Life goes on in between battles. They eat and take showers and tidy up. But they are there at the battlefield because of the battle. How crazy would it be if the enemy attacked (the moment an eager soldier was waiting for) he rushed not to his battle position but to put away his laundry. It doesn't make sense! But that is what we do as soldiers of the Lord.

Our job is to love. If you have any doubt on what it is you are made for let me make it clear. Our purpose is to love. Luke 10:27 says ". . .Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself."

When we see someone we can help and have compassion on - that is our battlefield. That is not the time to suppress our emotions, rush away, and get back to the agenda for the day. We were made for such a time as this (Esther 4:14).

Prayer:
Heavenly father, lead us to make worthy goals and to do lists for our day but help us not to lose your heart in it all. Open our eyes to the opportunities that you have put in our path to love others and to be your hands and feet. Amen.
