Changing our Focus

I don't know how many of you are parents. But, something that I have found to be very helpful with little kids when they are upset - maybe they want a toy they can't have or may they got hurt -it is helpful to distract them and make them focus on something else. Once they focus in on something else they forget about what they were upset about. I remember my oldest daughter, Kayla, using this tactic on her younger siblings when they were upset even though she was little herself. By the way, this can also be effective with all but the most obsessed adults.

What have you been focused on lately? I find that with the news coming at us all the time (even if I try to avoid it someone is telling me about it) it is easy to lose hope. Sometimes, I am so saddened by the news it is hard to snap out of it.

Even so, I propose that their is a lot more good in the world than bad. The news never reports the good news. I don't know why bad news spreads so much easier than good news. But it does.

When I was in the Army a couple years post 9-11, I was a journalist and our reserve unit was constantly putting out news stories about the amazing things that the military was doing throughout the world - health care missions, building schools, veterinary care, etc. Did I ever find these stories outside of our own publications? All I ever heard was the horrible news - stories that were cold and depressing.

It reminds me of Adam and Eve. Genesis 2:16-17 says And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it . . .

Adam and Eve were allowed to eat of every tree in the whole garden except one. And from then on that one became their focus. They could have focused on how many choices they had among the trees of the garden but instead they focused on the one tree that they were NOT supposed to eat from. That is sad but I think it is human nature. It is helpful to recognize the fallacy in our thinking and change our focus - preferably to something positive.

Maybe we have some help in our lives causing us to focus on the negative. Eve had the serpent coming along bringing up the negative. Wanting to talk about it. Maybe, without us realizing it that is what is happening to us too. Even so, I think we need to learn to recognize the enemy wants us to focus on the negative and keep our conversations and our focus positive.

God is good. Lets think about that. Lets talk about that.

Psalm 103:2 KJV says Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.

We are so amazingly blessed. If you have gotten this far with me, magnify the Lord with me. Tell me about his goodness. How is God blessing you? Do you have any testimonies to share? I would love to hear it.
