Living with an Eye for Opportunity part 1:
The Opportunity in the Word

I am planning on making of series of posts on having an eye for opportunity. Sometimes we get so caught up in all the doing and responsibility of life that we lose sight of the opportunities around us.

I love this quote by Thomas Edison: "We often miss opportunity because it's dressed in overalls and looks like work."

If I told you that in your backyard someone has buried treasure under an X. Yes, you would have to dig for it and that would possibly be very hard work. But, it would be hard work with a purpose. It is an opportunity to find treasure!

This can apply in so many places but one of them is in the word of the Lord. We have an opportunity to get to know God better and be wise through the Bible. Sometimes it is hard work and doesn't seem like much fun. But, it is just like digging for that treasure. We can study any other book until our eyes cross but it would be like digging in the beach sand - maybe it would be fun but being in our word is like digging where we KNOW there is treasure. So many bible verses attest to it that I am hesitant to even begin listing but here are a few:

Romans 10:17
Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

2 Timothy 3:16-17
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Here is one to ponder, Mark 4:17
. . . when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.

Isn't it interesting that hell/the devil/evil (whatever you want to call it) comes against us because the word which is alive in us is amazing and powerful and worth coming against. Hebrews 4:12 says that the word of God is quick, and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword. It is not us in particular that is a threat but when we have the word in us we become a force to be reckoned with.

I think many of us can handle spending more time in the word and benefiting more from the word. There is treasure to be had and we need to stay motivated to go and get it.
